Lawrence Leach, the immigrant ancestor to America, is said to have descended from John de Leach, surgeon to King Henry III of England. The coat of arms has three crowns, the significance of which is derived from an occasion when the kings of France and Scotland were prisoners of King Edward III, the three monarchs dined at the home of surgeon John de Leach. As a token of the occasion, King Edward handed Dr. Leach three crowns (coins.) Afterward, when the king granted him a large estate, three crowns were placed on his arms. Of Lawrence Leach, Governor Craddock wrote from Gravesend, England a letter to Governor Endicott of the Massachusetts Bay colony under date of 17 Apr 1629 in which is the following paragraph: "We desire to take notice of one Lawrence Leach whom we have found a careful and painful man and we doubt not that he will continue his diligence. Let him have your deserving respect." The worthy Lawrence Leech was sent here three months later on the ship Talbot in the first fleet bringing Rev. Francis Higginson to America. The Talbot dropped anchor 29 Jun 1629 and Rev. Higginson wrote in his journal: "On the 27 June, Saturday evening, we had a westerly wind which brought us to a fine harbor seven miles from Cape Ann where there was an inland near whither four of our men went with a boat and brought back ripe strawberries, gooseberries and sweet single roses. Monday 29th we passed along to Main Teek (Salem.) It was wonderful to behold so many islands resplendent with thick woods, high trees and many faire, green pastures." What a pleasant June welcome New England had for our pioneer ancestors Lawrence and Elizabeth Leach. Lawrence was sworn in as a freeman 18 May 1630. His life in New England seemed to justify the confidence placed in him by Governor Craddock, as he was one of seven men chosen 31 Dec 1638 to manage the public affairs of Salem. He was also one of the founders of the church there. Among his colleagues were Governor John Endicott, Governor Conant, William Hawthorne, and others of renown. He was a farmer and miller whose mills were so important to the economy of the country, in the year 1657 "a public way was laid out to them" in Salem and to the adjacent towns. He owned an iron foundry which was the first in the colonies. He held many positions of trust and his full, useful life earned deep respect for his memory. He died 24 Jun 1662 at the age of 82. His noncupative will, proved 25 Apr 1663, left all of his large estate to his wife, Elizabeth, who was appointed executrix. She died in 1674.
