GEORGE DAVIS, was known to have had a grant of 11 acres of land in Lynn, Massachusetts. In 1647 he was given full rights of citizenship. In 1655-56 he was a selectman and reelected in 1658-60. He married (1) MRS. EDMUND AUDLEY, and (2) SARAH CLARK. In the will of the worthy Edward Holyoke he was mentioned as a "Cosan. He was a seaman and was on board ship when he made his will 7 Dec 1664. Its quaint phrasing read in part:
"I, George Davis, being bound for Cape Feare, do now dispose of my outward estate as followeth, in case I die before I come again or shall hereafter make any other will; being in health, my whole estate that I leave in New England, I do bestow upon my wife and children and do make my wife executrix and son Benjamin executor jointly. (he names and provides for his five daughters) To my son Joseph I give all that I have now in the ship and that we may carry with us to Cape Feare with the weavers' loom, but in case it do miscary before it come there...(here he made other arrangements.)"
There is a warm parental love expressed in the will. He wants his daughters brought up in the "fear of God and well educated." In his codicil he seems to be especially interested in his son whom he names as:
"My son Joseph Coult. I do desire my son Benjamin to have care of him till he do take further orders about him. I have chosen for my overseer my brother William Clark of Lynn and do you choose another whom you think fit, and trust their faithfulness and care for my children."
