Francis Peabody, born in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, 1613-14, came to New England in the ship Planter In 1635. His name is on a certificate in the Rolles Court, Westminster Hall, London, dated 2 Apr 1635. He first settled in Ipswich, later in Hampton, New Hampshire, where he was one of the original settlers. He was made freeman there in 1642; often served on the jury, and was a member of the Grand Jury. In 1651 he sold his estate and moved to Topsfield, Massachusetts where he served on the town board, as lieutenant in the local military company and was honored member of the church during almost half a century. He was a large land owner in Topsfield, Boxford, and Rowley. His will revealed his fine intelligence and his tender regard for those in need. To his son Isaac he bequeathed a greater portion than to the others and stated: "And this I would have noted, that I have given ye (the) more to my son Isaac on consideration (of) ye (the) providence of God disabling him by the loss of one of his leggs." His son William was given an extra portion because he was "deprived of the use of one of his arms." He married Lydia, whose surname is unknown; Mary Foster, daughter of Reginald Foster. Mary was named in her husband's will, and, with sons John and Isaac, appointed executrix. The will was signed 20 Jan 1695 and proved 7 Aug 1698. Mary was also a legatee in the will of Reginald Foster of Ipswich, dated 30 Apr 1680 in which she was identified as "my daughter Mary, wife of Francis Peabody." Mary was the mother of at least half of the 14 children of Francis Peabody. However, Isaac was born before they left Hampton, and was the son of the first wife, Lydia. He was one of the sureties on a neighbor's bond 4 Jun 1645. No other references to John Peabody appear in the records of the colony except his will, which was written 16 Jul 1649. That his signature was an autograph and not just a mark is a sign of distinction for those early days. He bequeathed to his sons, Thomas, Francis and William and to a daughter Annie Rouse. He named his wife ISABELL PEABODY his sole executrix. Of his death date and place no record has been found. His will was proved in Boston 27 Apr 1667 and recorded in Plymouth.
