Elias Maverick born about 1604, Awliscombe, Devonshire, England; died 8 Sep 1684, Charleston, Massachusetts; married Ann Harris, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Harris. On 11 Jun 1633 Elias took the oath of allegiance in Massachusetts and settled in Chelsea where he became active in the defense of his country, and in 1654 was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company. He was a shipbuilder by trade and had interests in farming. He was loved by the Indians. When smallpox broke out among them and the sick were abandoned by their people, Elias and Ann, with all their servants went daily to administer to their needs. "Above thirty were buried by Mr. Maverick in one day." That Christian kindness, historians record, made Mr. Maverick's name worthy of remembrance. He died in 1684 at the age of 80. The terms of his will reflect the honesty and kindliness of his noble character. A spring on his property was so valuable to the public that, in dividing his estate among his sons, he stipulated that a half acre be left open for a public watering ground. He charged the executors of his will "to carry out their obligations and keep 16 sheep yearly, with their increase, for his father-in-law (stepfather) William Stitson, during his natural life." Elias is our 10th Great Grandfather Parents: Reverend John MAVERICK and Mary GYE. He was married to Ann (Annie) HARRIS on 11 Jun 1633 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts. Children were: Sarah MAVERICK . John Maverick christened 28 Dec 1578; died Feb, 1635, Dorchester, Massachusetts; married 28 Oct 1600 at Ilsingtan, Devon, Mary Guy. Their residence (30 Aug 1615) was the rectory of Beaworthy, Devan, until shortly before coming to Massachusetts, where he died. His wife was living with her son, Commissioner Samuel, in Rhode Island on 6 Oct 1666, when he wrote a letter to Secretary Sir William Morice in England in which he said, "Mother presents her humble service." The Maverick family came to America on the ship Mary and John which set sail from Plymouth, England 20 Mar 1630 with passengers from Devon, Sommerset, and Dorset Counties. The emigration was under the patronage of Rev. John White, patriarch of Dorchester, and subsequently founder of Dorchester, Massachusetts. Before the ship set sail that company of humble Puritans assembled in fasting and prayer in the newly built hospital in Plymouth to form themselves into a church. For their pastors they chose the Rev. John Maverick and John Wareham. For two months and ten days they were tossed about in an angry sea before arriving in Massachusetts. It is interesting to note that both the John Maverick family and William and Elizabeth (Cooke) Walton family came from Devonshire. Both men were college bred with degrees from Emanuel College in Cambridge and Exeter College, Oxford. They had five sons and three daughters, all of whom came with them.
