bulletE. Henry SWITZER died in 1877. Henry B. Switzer, a big and ugly man, had a claim at Tipton. He was Great Aunt Julia's husband. He, with four other men, conspired in armed robbery. Henry went to the cabin of john Goudy on a pretext and did not find where John kept the money. The next night the five returned and robbed John and made it an escapade by robbing two other homesteaders. Switzer was recognized. They were afraid to serve the warrant on him at Sugar Creek, but eventually he was brought to trial. The other four were captured, one by one, and flogged. Henry got a change of venue to Cedar County. He made it up with the sheriff that if the verdict was guilty, one of the jurors should hand a handerchief out of his pocket. The jury was hung 11-1 and when they filed in one of the jurors accidentally had a handkerchief out of his pocket. Henry had an old gray tied out front and he escaped. Later he went west and became wealthy. A Sheriff Kane from Cedar County visited him in 1874 in Vallejo, Sonora County, California, and one of the sons was under indictment for killing to the fair. Henry died in 1877. My Uncle Arke visited them later and said that they had a string of race horses.
