bulletMartha (McCarter) was born in 1717 in Northern Ireland. She died in 1778 in Saint Georges, Lincoln Co., Maine. In July 1741 , 230 Ulster-Scots, probably Presbyterians, formed an emigration plan called "The Grand Design" and set sail for Philadelphia on the ship Martha & Eliza. The ship was blown off-course and dismasted in a storm. After drifting three months at sea, in November, they were
wrecked in the Bay of Fundy on Grand Manan Island and survivors were left to the mercy of a north Atlantic winter in the open. Because the group was dispersed around the island, some were rescued by salvagers after several weeks while others had to endure the entire winter. These were finally found in April by Native Americans who carried letters to settlers here in our village, 100 miles from the island, and arranged for rescue. The last group included a young woman, Isabel Galloway (Gamble), her infant child, and her friend Martha Sherer?(McCarter) whose husbands had succumbed to the ordeal.. When they arrived in St George they were so emaciated they were thought to be elderly. As they recovered, they attracted the attention of some local men Archibald Gamble and John McCarter who offered marriage.

Notes: 1)Several sources mention that Isabel and her husband Jack had friends who travelled with them- David and Mary (or Sarah) Sherer. In several genealogies, Martha McCarter is called Mary or Sarah. 2)Cyrus Eaton in his Annals of Warren circa 1865 has the name of the ship as the Grand Design and the landing place as Mt Desert Island Maine. Several authors who have written about this event have used that info. Through some detective work, I have discovered that several survivors sent a grievance to the king regarding their treatment by the captain. It is filed in the Massachusetts archives and tells more fascinating details, as well as the actual name of the ship and the fact
that "Grand Design"was the name of the project.

She was married to John MCCARTER in 1742. Children were: Jane MCCARTER, Martha MCCARTER, Mary MCCARTER, James MCCARTER, Margaret MCCARTER, Elizabeth MCCARTER.
